As Pritam Singh awaits February verdict, when will Lawrence Wong call the election?

Given the unique circumstances, it could very well be an election that shakes up local politics more than it usually would – and both sides can win and lose big.

During a conference last Friday, Singapore's Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, admitted that no decision has yet been made regarding the date of the next General Election and that the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee is yet to be convened.

Despite the fact that the government, led by the PM, has typically enjoyed considerable leeway in deciding when to call the election, this year it is far more constrained by the turmoil caused by political trials of S Iswaran and Pritam Singh, who is expected to hear the verdict in his case on February 17.

And even though it may seem that it would clear the path for the GE, the reality is a bit more complicated.
