Nobody avoided Trump's vengeance for decades of offshoring jobs out of American economy. Bringing them back to the US is one of the goals of the tariffs he has just announced, which are raising the costs of producing goods abroad.
Singapore government was hoping that, given the trade deficit it has with the USA, it would be spared any new levies, but that was not to be, as 10% is Trump's minimum (although North Korea, Cuba and Russia have been spared for now – likely for leverage in future talks).
Painful as it may be – after all, now everything made in Singapore will be 10% more expensive for American buyers – it might yet turn out that Trump's tariffs will be a boon for the city-state.
